The Department of the Treasury is an executive department and is the treasury of the United States Government. In 1789 the U.S. Treasury Department was established by an Act of Congress to manage government revenue. The current Secretary of the Treasury and a member of the Cabinet is Timothy Geithner.

The United States Treasury Department is charged with a wide range of financial responsibilities. In addition to monetary functions such as budgets, taxes, and currency production and circulation, the U.S. Treasury also oversees critical functions in enforcement, economic policy development, and international treaty talks.

U.S. Treasury Auction Information

The U.S. Department of the Treasury is responsible for the auction of Internal Revenue (IRS) seized properties and tax sales. The IRS auctions include real estate, vehicles, and other properties. The Treasury Executive Office of Assests and Forfeiture (TEOAF) also conducts auctions of real estate, vehicles and general property.

Treasury Bills (T-Bills) Information

Treasury bills are sold in terms ranging from a few days to 52 weeks. Treasury bills, also known as T-Bills, are typically sold at a discount from the par amount (also called face value).

For instance, you might pay $990 for a $1,000 Treasury bill. When the Treasury bill matures, you would be paid $1,000. The difference between the purchase price and face value is the interest.

Treasury bonds, also known as government bonds, are issued in terms of 30 years and pay interest every six months until they mature. When a Treasury bond matures, you are paid its face value. The price and yield of a Treasury bond are determined at auction. The price may be greater than, less than, or equal to the face value of the bond.

Treasury Notes

Treasury Notes (T-Notes) Information

Treasury notes are issued in terms of 2, 3, 5, 7, and 10 years, and pay interest every six months until they mature. The price of a note may be greater than, less than, or equal to the face value of the note.

The price of a fixed rate security depends on its yield to maturity and the interest rate. If the yield to maturity (YTM) is greater than the interest rate, the price will be less than par value; if the YTM is equal to the interest rate, the price will be equal to par; if the YTM is less than the interest rate, the price will be greater than par. When a note matures, you are paid its face value.

Treasury Inflation-Protected Securities (TIPS) Information

Treasury Inflation-Protected Securities (TIPS) are marketable securities where the principal is adjusted by changes in the Consumer Price Index (CPI). With inflation (a rise in the index), the principal increases. With a deflation (a drop in the index), the principal decreases.

The relationship between TIPS and the Consumer Price Index affects both the sum you are paid when your TIPS matures and the amount of interest that a TIPS pays you every six months.
